This past weekend I made the super long trek back to my hometown of Alexandria, Kentucky. (And yes, I know that it is only 2 hours away….it was supposed to be a joke). I went home mainly for the WEBN fireworks but also to watch the ultimate battle between besties. What is the battle of besties you ask….Let me start from the beginning.
I am a youth volunteer for a local church in my hometown. Kylie and Olivia are two youth students that attend the group. They have been best friends (aka besties) since they were 6. Both are 8th graders that play soccer for their high school…yes, you heard me correctly…high school soccer as 8th graders. These girls eat, sleep and breathe soccer. It’s all they have done since their mothers popped them out 12 (and 13) years ago. Anyway, back to the story. Kylie plays soccer for Scott and Olivia plays for Campbell County. Last Friday was the face off…the ultimate battle between besties.
Before the game, both girls agreed not to let the outcome of the game affect their friendship. Who ever won, won and that was that. The rivalry ended with the blow of the final whistle. A very noble decision. As the teams took their place on the field Kylie and Olivia gave each other a friendly smile accompanied with a fist bump. And thus, the battle began.
The game started off slow with no score in the 1st half. But the second half was a different story. Scott took the lead with a goal within the first 2 minutes of the half. Kylie had the assist. But Olivia fired back with two goals towards the half way mark. Kylie attempted two come back goals but they were blocked by Campbell County’s sophomore goalie. Kylie took one last shot within the final minute of the game but came up short when the shot was denied. Campbell County won 2-1.
Kylie didn’t have the look of disappoint on her face. But a huge smile as she ran over to Olivia and gave her a bear hug. Olivia and Kylie fist bumped and hugged one last time before walking off the field. Even though Olivia won, Kylie was not angry. She was happy that her bestie won her first high school soccer game. The rivalry ended when the final whistle blew just as they discussed. They left it all on the field…the way a true friendship should be.
